Seamlessly Integrating Nature and Architecture: The Folding System at Residence Salt Lake City
In modern architectural design, the boundary between indoor comfort and outdoor living is becoming increasingly transparent—especially in high-end residential projects across Utah and the Salt Lake City region, where expansive views and climate performance must coexist.
At VELTAA, we specialize in removing these boundaries through precision engineering and custom manufacturing. A prime example of this approach is our work on a residence project in Salt Lake City, Utah, where we successfully integrated a high-performance Folding System into a complex architectural composition—without compromising design intent or technical performance.
Project Spotlight: Residence at Salt Lake City, Utah
Located in Utah, the entrance structure of this residential block required a solution that was both visually striking and structurally precise. The defining challenge of the project was its sloped roof and facade geometry, which demanded more than a standard door or window application.
Rather than integrating the Folding System directly into an inclined facade surface, the architectural intent focused on the transition zone where the sloped roof geometry meets the vertical facade plane. This junction required careful coordination to preserve clean lines, maintain structural integrity, and ensure smooth system operation.
Through VELTAA’s custom detailing, manufacturing accuracy, and project coordination, the Folding System was seamlessly integrated into the vertical facade, aligning precisely with the adjacent sloped architectural elements. The result is a clean, modern composition where complex geometry and high-performance aluminum systems coexist without compromise.
This approach is particularly relevant for architects and builders in Utah, where custom residential projects often combine bold roof forms, challenging geometries, and demanding climate conditions—requiring solutions that go beyond standard system applications.
Why the Folding System? Technical Superiority for Custom Residential Projects
Given the architectural geometry and the desire to maximize openness, a conventional sliding system was not sufficient for this project. Instead, a high-performance Folding System was selected for its flexibility, performance, and architectural freedom—making it ideal for complex residential applications.
1.Unmatched Dimensions and Transparency
To maximize visual openness, the Folding System supports large vent sizes—up to 1200 mm in width and 3000 mm in height per vent. With a maximum weight capacity of 120 kg per vent, the system accommodates heavy, high-performance glazing up to 63 mm thick.
This capability allows expansive glass surfaces to open fully, ensuring smooth operation while maintaining uninterrupted views and a seamless indoor–outdoor connection.
2.High Thermal Performance
In climates like Utah’s, thermal performance is non-negotiable. The Folding System offers high insulation values, with Uf values down to 2.25 W/m²K, meeting stringent performance expectations for residential projects.
This ensures that even large openings and extensive glazing do not compromise indoor comfort or energy efficiency, supporting year-round performance in varying climate conditions.
3.Versatile Configurations and Threshold Options
Flexibility is essential in custom residential architecture. The Folding System supports configurations with 2 to 8 door leaves, which can be stacked to one side or split at different positions depending on design requirements.
An optional door-locking principle allows the first leaf to function as an entrance door without limiting the system’s folding capability.
To address different functional needs—from weather resistance to accessibility—the system offers multiple threshold solutions:
High Performance – Maximum air, wind, and water resistance
Double Weather Seal – Ideal for renovation projects with solid resistance
Low Threshold – Only an 18 mm rise for improved accessibility
Flat Bottom – Easy passage for high-traffic residential areas
The VELTAA Standard
The Residence at Salt Lake City exemplifies VELTAA’s ability to deliver engineering-driven design support, custom aluminum systems, and precise execution—even under geometrically complex conditions.
By integrating advanced Folding Systems into challenging architectural compositions, we ensure that design intent is fully realized without compromise. For architects, builders, and contractors working on custom residential projects in Utah, this project demonstrates how performance, design, and precision can align seamlessly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a folding system suitable for complex architectural geometries?
Yes. Folding systems are especially well-suited for custom residential projects with complex roof forms and facade transitions. When properly engineered, they can be integrated into vertical facade planes while aligning seamlessly with adjacent sloped or non-standard architectural elements.
How does a folding system perform in Utah’s climate conditions?
High-performance folding systems are designed to meet demanding climate requirements. With advanced thermal break technology and high insulation values, they provide reliable energy efficiency and comfort in both hot summers and cold winters typical of Utah.
What role does engineering play in the success of a folding system?
Engineering is critical. Beyond system selection, factors such as load calculations, facade alignment, threshold detailing, and climate performance must be addressed. An engineering-driven approach ensures that folding systems perform reliably over time while preserving architectural intent.
